Bonjour! Ça va?
Hola. ¿Cómo estás?
French is a core subject from Year 5 to Year 11 at Northfields. All students have the opportunity to study French, either as a First Language or as a Foreign Language. In First Language classes, students are expected to develop their reading skills to respond to and appreciate a variety of texts. Students are also able to communicate effectively in writing. Foreign Language classes are structured about the four areas of language acquisition; namely Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. In all French classes, students have the opportunity to learn more about the cultures of French-speaking regions through research work and projects. Through different types of activities and resources, students are exposed to literature and stylistic devices to prepare them for Years 12 and 13.
In Years 12 and 13, students can choose between AS or A-Level French (if they opt for Cambridge A-levels) or between French A or French B (if they choose the IB Diploma). AS French is a language course; students choosing A-Level French will also study a literature component. French B is a second language course; Foreign Language French students, choosing IB, usually opt for this level. Higher Level French B students will study two literature texts. French A is offered as a Language and Literature course and targets First Language French students.
We believe in the use of information technology to support language learning. Our classes are equipped with projectors and students are often taken to IT labs to access language websites. In addition to textbooks, teachers also use magazines, songs and movies to make sure students are exposed to the language.
¡Hablamos Español! ¿Y tú?
Spanish is offered in after-school classes from Year 7 to Year 11. Students can opt to write the IGCSE Spanish Foreign Language paper in Year 11 if they sign for the after-school classes. This provides them with an additional subject at IGCSE level. Classes are taught in the IT labs, students learn the language but also about different Hispanic cultural festivals.
