Welcome to the English Faculty: The Jane Austen Centre

At NIHS, we wish to share with you our passion for language and literature. As you enter this part of the building, you will discover great authors from different periods, who we believe have paved the way to the emergence of such great literary works.

Love, marriage, pain, nature, religion are some of the themes we are exposed to in their works.

If you would like to be further enlightened on the path of literature, see one of us in the department, we would love to tell you all about these great authors.

YEAR 5 AND 6

Primary School students follow the British National Curriculum. Our aim is to prepare younger students with the skills they will need to be confident readers and writers. Emphasis is placed on grammar and punctuation and students are encouraged to focus on the accuracy and structure of their writing. Students are also taught editing skills to improve the quality of their written work. Once a week, students participate in a Literature lesson and are exposed to a wide range of novels in order to instil in them a love of reading as well as to introduce them to literary techniques such as figurative language. The primary English programme is supplemented with drama and public speaking lessons where students are taught skills to prepare them for an annual year-end production.

READING

The English Faculty believes it is essential that we maintain a rigorous reading culture amongst our students. It is through reading that young people become world citizens, develop compassion and understanding of others.

Reading is essential , it will help you with the task of essay writing, build vocabulary and expand your repertoire of words.

15 minutes a day, read, read and read.

RESOURCES

To become a successful writer or exam candidate, take time to always consult a dictionary  to ensure correct spelling. If actually flicking through a dictionary is too much of an arduous task for you, have you thought about online dictionaries?
